Before the first hard freeze
Three checks separate a quiet winter from an expensive one. Start with your panel: pop the cover (or have us do it) and look for discoloration, corrosion, or breakers that won't stay seated. Next, test every GFCI and AFCI by pressing the test button. Finally, exercise your generator under load — not just a no-load start.

Heat trace and snow-melt systems
Heat trace cables fail in two ways: the cable itself degrades, or the controller's moisture sensor freezes open. Cycle the system on a cold morning and feel the gutter or roof edge for warmth within 15 minutes. No heat means it's time for a service call before the ice dam forms.
Outdoor receptacles and service entrance
Snow load and ice can damage weatherheads and pull meter sockets out of plumb. Walk around the house and look at where the service drop attaches. Any visible cracks in the weatherhead, exposed copper, or rust at the meter base needs immediate attention — that's a utility-side conversation we can coordinate for you.
