A Level 2 EV charger in Alaska is a slightly different conversation than in Seattle. Cold soak reduces charging speed, garages are often shared with the panel, and a lot of Anchorage homes are still on 100A service. Here's the install checklist we walk through with every homeowner.
Charger selection
For most homes we recommend a 40A or 48A hardwired charger. Plug-in NEMA 14-50 units are convenient but the receptacles are a known failure point under continuous load — hardwiring eliminates that. We size the circuit to the charger and the breaker to NEC continuous-load rules.
Panel capacity and load calc
Before the wire goes in, we run a load calculation. If you're on 100A service with electric heat or a hot tub, the EV charger may push you over — that's the panel-upgrade conversation. On 200A service you almost always have room with smart load management.
Cold-weather realities
At -10°F, EV batteries accept charge slowly until they warm up. Pre-conditioning from the app while plugged in solves most of the headache. Plan for the charger to live in a heated or attached garage; outdoor installs are possible but cable handling at -20°F is no fun.
Permits and inspection
EV chargers in the Anchorage Bowl require a permit and an inspection. We pull it, meet the inspector, and hand you the signed card.
