Whole-Home Surge Protection: Worth It in Alaska?

Alaska doesn't have the lightning storms that drive surge-protection sales in Florida — but we have utility transients, generator transfer events, and aging service drops, all of which produce voltage spikes that quietly kill electronics. A Type 2 surge protective device (SPD) at the panel costs less than one replaced refrigerator board.

What it protects

Whole-home SPDs clamp voltage at the panel before it reaches your devices. They cover everything downstream: the furnace control board, the well pump VFD, the heat pump, the appliances. Point-of-use surge strips at the TV and computer are a good second layer — neither replaces the other.

Installation

A panel-mounted SPD is a 30-minute install in most cases. We coordinate it with any other panel work to avoid a separate trip. Modern units have an indicator light so you'll know when the device has absorbed enough hits to need replacement (usually 7–10 years).
